GISPA observes International Internet Day

A senior official of an internet service provider, on Monday appealed to the Ministry of Education to assist operators of internet services in their efforts to raise educational standard in Ghana.

“Anybody who visits the (Internet) caf? irrespective of what he or she would browse, would add to his or her knowledge,” Mrs Nanayaa T. Owusu-Prempeh, Chief Executive Officer, TIN-IFA Ghana Limited, said.

She was speaking at a press conference organised by the Ghana Internet Service Providers (GISPA) to mark the Third International Internet Day, which fell on Sunday. GISPA was established one-and-a-half years ago.

Mrs Owusu-Prempeh, who is also the Vice Chairman of GISPA, said the association aims at promoting the widespread usage of the internet in Ghana and pursuing and satisfactorily resolving communication, primarily through written communication issues, which affect internet service providers.

She, therefore, called for an education campaign to sensitise the public on the positive aspect of the Internet to make its operation in the country a success.

Mr Francis Quartey, Chairman of GISPA, called for the creation of a Ghana Internet Exchange (GIX) to speed up the value addition to local content and economic activities.

He said there were about 200 million minutes of traffic that transverse Ghana’s borders in the form of information sharing from outside.

Ghana has about 52 licensed Internet Service Providers and 13 of them are currently operational
