Tamale, Aug 4, GNA – About 200 school girls drawn from four districts in the Northern Region are benefiting from a week long girls’ science, mathematics and technology camp at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi.
The camp, which is organized by Campaign for Female Education (Camfed), is aimed at encouraging more girls to develop interest in mathematics, science and technology.
Madam Dolores Dickson, the Executive Director for Camfed, said the organization was working in response to the exclusion of girls from education in northern Ghana and to assist more girls in schools. She said Camfed’s vision was a world in which every child is educated, protected, respected and valued and grows up to turn the tide of poverty.
Madam Dickson said the girls would be touring the College of Engineering, College of Science, the ICT Centre, Kumasi Stadium, Kumasi Zoo, the Cultural Centre, the airport, have talks with professionals in science, mathematics and technology fields and have mentors to emulate and develop interest in the subjects.
Mr. Stephen Sumani Nayini, the Northern Regional Minister, said girls could compete with boys in science, mathematics and technology. He said special emphasis needed to be placed on girls’ education to ensure a conducive and a supportive learning environment in these subjects to improve girl’s involvement. 04 Aug 09
