Ten selected girls from some Junior High Schools have undergone a rigorous Information Communication Technology (ICT) training organized by the Savana Signatures, a non-governmental organisation using ICT to promote development.
They were taken through high earned computer skills making them able to develop computer programmes and websites. Thus they have acquired employable skills for the job market even before completing their basic education.
Mr Stephen Agbenyo, Executive Director of the Savana Signatures, indicated that the kind of training lessons given the girls was given only in computer classes in universities, stressing that it was part of efforts by his organization to promote female education and increase female participation in ICT.
Alhaji Abdul Rahman, Tamale Metropolitan Director of Education, expressed excitement at the training, saying such programmes would rekindle the interest of education in the girl-child and “that alone will prevent them from travelling to the south to engage in head-porting popularly referred to as kayayei.”
Alhaji Rahman said the training given to the girls would benefit generations to come, as the girls would surely pass on the knowledge gained to their colleagues and children in the near future.
He pledged his personal assistance to help the two girls who dropped out of the programme due to financial constraints to under-go the training.
