The Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication (GIFEC) has supplied the police with 600 computers as part of its efforts to help bridge the digital gap between the institution and the emerging complex cyber environment.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) David Asante-Apeatu, Director-General, Research, Planning and Information Communication Technology (ICT), said the Fund had also provided them with 3,000 cell phones for distribution to personnel on operational duties and those in remote areas.
He said together with GIFEC, the service had conducted a nationwide electronic-assessment to get clearer picture of the real needs of the police.
He said this when opening an ICT train-the-trainer workshop for 34 police personnel selected from all the 10 regions at the JAK CITI ICT Centre at Nkwantakese in the Afigya-Kwabre District.
DCOP Asante-Apeatu said the police occupied strategic position in promoting and defending the development of the country’s democracy and therefore needed to be equipped.
He said he was confident that the training programme would significantly prepare the participants to develop and design training programmes to enhance ICT proficiency in the service.
Mr Kofi Attor, a GIFEC Administrator, appealed to them to take the training seriously to help achieve the intended purpose.
He said they should ensure that they bring the knowledge and skills acquired to bear on the performance of the service in their various districts and regions.
