Ghana, South Africa to deepen bilateral relations

Accra, Aug. 10, GNA – Ghana and South Africa on Wednesday expressed their commitment to deepen bilateral relations through trade and investments, especially in the area of agro-processing. This was the out come of a meeting between the South African High Commissioner to Ghana, Mr Rapulame Sydney Molekane and Mr Felix Owusu-Adjapong, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs in Accra. The two officials stressed the need for the sharing of ideas on how to boost fair trade between the two countries, which currently weighs in favour of South Africa.

Mr Owusu-Adjapong said Ghana could tap the expertise of South Africans in agro-processing techniques.

“We are both members of the Commonwealth and other international organisations so there is the need to co-operate and support each other.”

“For example we supported South Africa’s candidate to win the Chairmanship of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Union Women Association and we intend to further compliment each other.” Mr Molekane said South Africa had plans to learn from Ghana parliamentary democracy.

“South Africa has not got the experience that Ghana has been able to acquire and my meeting with the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs will be helpful to facilitate exchange of visits by parliamentarians and government officials from both countries.”

He said South Africa became an independent country only 11 years ago, and “we have to liase with our Ghanaian counterparts as well as share ideas on how to promote democratic governance.” Mr Molekane said his country would soon send down a trade delegation to Ghana to do a feasibility study on areas of interest as well as consult with the Ministry of Private Sector Development and President’s Special Initiative. 10 Aug. 05
