Accra, Oct 12, GNA – Dr Jendayi Frazier, the US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, on Wednesday said Ghana needed to share its democratic and economic successes with other West African countries. She said this would send a strong signal to the outside world of Ghana’s commitment to peace, stability and development. Dr Frazier said this at the Kotoka International Airport on her arrival from Liberia where she observed the elections. She said by the peaceful and orderly manner in which the election was conducted, Liberians had demonstrated their commitment to a lasting peace and democratic governance.
”All the presidential contestants have pledged to abide by the results and also to support whoever emerges as the winner. It is inspiring to see Liberians making efforts at ensuring a lasting peace after 14 years of conflict.”
Dr Frazier, who was appointed to her position in August, said she would push further the frontiers of peace building and security to make the world a better and safer place. ”We are working to ensure that there is no conflicts on the continent. Liberia has shown the way and I believe others like Ivory Coast, Sudan and Somalia will follow.”
She said the Bush Administration has committed about 3.2 billion dollars in development assistance to Third World countries and that President Bush has been a crusader in ensuring that countries like Ghana enjoy total debt cancellation.
Dr Frazier said some of her priority areas for Africa would be to support and to spread political freedom, expand economic opportunities and address the challenges of HIV/AIDS.
