Accra, Sept. 17 GNA – Ghana will host the 26th African Parliamentary Union (APU) meeting from October 17 to October 21 in Accra.
The Union, which has over 30 African countries as members, would deliberate on pertinent issues facing the various African Parliaments, New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) and a range of other issues.
President John Agyekum Kufuor would open the conference. This came to light when the Algerian Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Hassane Rabehi presented computers and accessories to the Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Mr Peter Ala Adjetey at a ceremony in Accra.
Mr Hassane Rabehi said the items were to show appreciation for the support his country enjoyed from Ghana and also to consolidate the cordial relationship that has existed between the two countries. He congratulated President John Agyekum Kufuor, Chairman of the economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for his untiring efforts to bring peace to the Sub-Region.
He said Ghana was among some of the first countries to recognize Algeria when it gained its independence from France in 1958 and has since stood beside her even up to now.
“I am serving in a country whose success can be visibly seen everyday. Ghana remains a haven of peace in the midst of conflict and turbulence,” he said.
Receiving the items, Mr Ala Adjetey expressed the hope that the relationship between the Parliaments of the two countries would continue to be strengthened.
Those present at the ceremony included Mr Freddie Blay, First Deputy Speaker, Mr Felix Owusu Agyepong, the Majority Leader, Mr Isaac Agyei-Mensah, the Deputy Minority Leader and Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Majority Chief Whip.
