Chairman of Parliament’s Select Committee on Sports Hon. Ernest Henry Norgbey says he would not be surprised if the government considers dissolving the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and rebuilding the organisation from the beginning.
Norgbey made the remarks in an exclusive interview with Akoma 87.9 FM after Ghana’s 4-2 defeat by The Gambia in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The result has intensified scrutiny of the Black Stars and prompted fresh debate about the administration and wider direction of football in Ghana.
Referencing developments in Nigeria, Norgbey said the government may eventually be forced to consider a fundamental change to the way the sport is managed.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if the government steps in and says, ‘We are dissolving the GFA and starting afresh,’ because we have seen something similar happen in Nigeria. We need to invest more in our sporting activities.”
However, the Sports Committee Chairman made clear that he was not demanding the GFA’s immediate dissolution. He said the committee first needed to understand the circumstances surrounding the Black Stars and establish what was happening within the team’s camp.
“If we are banned for two years, those two years could be used to rebuild and restructure the system, but it is not a call I will make at this moment until I get the understanding of what exactly is happening in camp.”
The comments follow Ghana’s heavy defeat in Accra, which has renewed concerns over the national team’s recent performances and the broader state of Ghana football.
The Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports plans to engage both the GFA and the Minister responsible for Sports. Those discussions are intended to seek explanations for the Black Stars’ latest performance and examine the wider issues affecting football administration in the country.
Norgbey also used the interview to call for greater investment in Ghana’s sporting sector, while maintaining that any decision on the future structure of the GFA should follow a proper assessment of the situation.
