The Ghana Education Service (GES) has taken immediate action to address recent violent incidents in some senior high schools.
Following confirmed reports of attacks on Bawku SHS, Nalerigu SHS, and Zuarungu SHS, resulting in loss of life, injuries, and destruction of property, the GES has temporarily closed the affected schools to ensure student and staff safety.
“The Management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has received confirmed reports of violent incidents at Bawku SHS, Nalerigu SHS, and Zuarungu SHS, which have resulted in the tragic loss of student lives, injuries, and significant damage to school property.” the statement reads
In a statement released today July 30, 2025, GES condemns the violent acts and expresses condolences to bereaved families and affected school communities.
The service assured that it is working with stakeholders to ensure SHS 3 students can sit for the upcoming WASSCE under safe conditions, considering special exam arrangements and secure centers.
According to GES, for SHS 1 and 2 students, alternative learning avenues are being explored to ensure lesson continuity while campuses are closed for safety assessments. Counseling services are also being strengthened to help students and staff manage trauma.
The GES says it appreciates the government’s swift evacuation of students and is collaborating with security agencies to enhance school safety. The service calls on stakeholders, community leaders, parents, and law enforcement to support efforts to maintain peace and discipline in educational institutions.
