GBC suspends collection of TV licence

The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, GBC, has suspended the collection of the TV licence fee for now.

The decision was arrived at to pave the way for the determination of an interim interlocutory injection case on the collection and disbursements of the fee.

The Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa, Suleiman Braimah, says it is good for the GBC to suspend the collection of the revised TV licence fee to do more public education on it.

He said this will pave the way for enough consultation and education on the issue.

Speaking to Radio Ghana, Mr. Braimah however underscored the need for every citizen to pay the TV license fee to ensure effective public service broadcasting.

Mr. Braimah also identified some concerns which need to be addressed before the resumption of the collection.
