GBC refuses to show Atta-Mills’ Press Conference

Ghana Television (GTV) last Friday turned down a request by the Atta-Mills campaign team to play an edited version of the press conference at which Prof. Atta-Mills declared his intention to contest the NDC Presidential candidacy at the party’s upcoming primaries in December.

The declaration, was made at a Press Conference held at the KAMA Conference Centre in Accra on Tuesday, 10 September 2002. The Office of Professor Atta-Mills had written to request for airtime for a paid advertisement of the play back of the declaration on GTV at a cost of about ? 6,500,000.00.

Mr Wallace Bampoe-Addo, Acting Director of TV, however in a letter dated 13th September 2002, said that, “corporate policy does not allow the paid full broadcast of this kind of material during the ‘political off-season’ except in our news bulletins”.

“Ghana Palaver’s” enquires have revealed that nobody seems to be aware of when this corporate policy of GBC was formulated, and when, if at all, it was made known to the public.
