GAAS welcomes Prof. Yankah’s lecture after WAEC snub

The Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences is set to hold a lecture over the controversial SHS three-year-four-year pendulum with Professor Kwesi Yankah months after the topic was dumped by WAEC.

The West African Examination Council which had invited the academician to give a lecture to commemorate its annual endowment fund in March this year, dropped him after he had presented the SHS topic as his theme for the lecture.

In a statement announcing the change of speaker, WAEC said “While admitting that the subject falls within the broad themes suggested by the WAEC endowment fund, we are minded to observe that it has the potential of generating political controversy, especially in an election year such as 2016.

“The council supports the exchange of scholarly ideas and works without any fetters. However, it recognises the tendency to be drawn into a political debate, which it strives to avoid in order to remain professional and not be distracted from executing its core mandate”.

The statement concluded : “We would therefore advise that your lecture be put on hold and save for another occasion when the season is right”.

However, StarrFMonline.com has learnt that the Academy of Arts and Sciences will hold the lecture on the controversial topic with the professor on Tuesday May 3 at its auditorium in Accra.
