Funerals at Jema to be held one in a month

Jema (B/A), April 2, GNA – The chiefs and elders of Jema in Kintampo South District of Brong Ahafo have directed that funerals are be performed once in every second week of the month to reduce their rampant occurrence in the town.

The directive, aimed at ensuring that the people had time to engage in productive ventures also cautioned the people against funeral donations exceeding GHC 2.00.

Mr Kwadwo Adu, a spokesman for the Krontihene, who disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Jema, said violators would be dealt with by the traditional authorities.

He said the chiefs and elders took the decision to ensure that residents did not spend the weekends on funerals at the expense of their economic activities.

“It is also to discourage the practice whereby people use funeral grounds as a platform for amassing wealth,” the spokesman added. Mr Adu, however, stated that non-citizens were at liberty to donate any amount to a bereaved family at observance of funeral rites. 2 April 09
