France would assist Winneba University

Winneba, May 12, GNA – The French Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Jean Michael Berrit on Monday met with the authorities of the University of Education Winneba (UEW) to discuss how best his government can further help to promote the teaching and learning of the French language at the University and in the country.

Mr. |Berrit was accompanied to the meeting by Patrick Booirea, project officer for the embassy. While those from the University include, Prof. Jophis Anamuah-Mensah, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Jonas Akpanglo Nartey, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Mr.D.S.Y. Amuzu, head of the department of French.

During the discussion the authorities thanked the French government for its assistance so far offered in the teaching of the language in the country, especially at the University and appealed for more assistance for the provision of more structures and teaching and learning materials.

They said the development of the French language in the country depends greatly on the University since it trains teachers who would in turn teach it at the JSS and secondary school levels.

According to them the teaching and learning of the language is not encouraging at the JSS and SSS level due to inadequate teaching and learning materials and staff but said that the University is doing its best to turn out more graduates to go and augment the situation.

With the assistance of the French government, a centre equipped with items, including one satellite disc, a digital poplar, one decoder and subscription for Francophone TV, programmes and a computer. On behalf of his team, Mr Berrit commended the authorities for the wonderful job done so far to promote the teaching and learning of the French language, which has now been seen as very necessary to learn.
