Four displaced persons, including three women and a teenage girl, have died at a temporary shelter in Wenchi in the Bono Region, deepening the humanitarian toll of the recent Gbenyiri conflict.
According to reports, two of the victims fell ill shortly after arriving at the camp and were rushed to the Wenchi Hospital, where they later passed away while receiving treatment.
The teenage girl reportedly died on-site at the camp, while the fourth victim, a woman in her early 90s, was sent back to her home community of Gbongbon in the Bole District. She died two days after her return.
Although the exact causes of death are yet to be medically established, conditions at the camp are believed to be a contributing factor. Sources cited exposure to harsh weather, inadequate healthcare, and worsening pre-existing illnesses as likely reasons.
“Many of the displaced are women and children. Some sustained injuries while fleeing, while others already had health issues that have deteriorated in this environment,” one source explained.
The Wenchi camp is one of several sites hosting displaced residents, with others located in Sawla, Vonkore, Techiman, Sobiriso (one and two), Sefi, and across the border in Ivory Coast.
These latest fatalities raise the total number of deaths linked to the Gbenyir conflict to 36.
