Forestry Commission expose staff to risk management

Accra, Nov. 24, GNA – Personnel of the Forestry Commission on Wednesday began a two-day workshop in Accra, on capacity development on risk management, corporate governance and effective controls. The workshop on the theme: “Risk Management, Corporate Governance and Effective Controls,” attracted regional and zonal officers who would be exposed to effective control, monitoring and evaluation in internal auditing.

Mr Afari Dartey, Chief Executive Officer of the Commission observed that effective leadership, good corporate and co-operation among staff in internal auditing could achieve the objectives of the organisation. He said the Commission would continue to lay emphasise on risk management, corporate governance and effective controls as the bedrock for the achievement of the commission’s strategic imperatives. Mr Dartey said the Internal Audit Unit of the Commission had been in the doldrums.

“The general perception that the internal auditor is a Policeman who looks for wrong doers and ask for their prosecution is wrong. “The work of the internal auditor is to review, appraise and report.for managerial action,” he noted.

Mr Richard Ntim, Honorary Sectary, Institute of Internal Auditors, Ghana, said if personnel of the commission played their roles effectively in governance, risk management and control, it would contribute significantly in the achievement of the strategic objectives of the body. He said the internal auditing was an independent assurance and consulting activity designed to add value and improve on an organisation’s operations.

Mr Ntim said auditing also helped in accomplishing systematic and disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, control and governance processes.

Mr Ransford Adjei, Director-General of the Internal Audit Agency advised the participants, especially the internal auditors to strictly abide by the Procurement Act, Financial Act and other laws that falls in line with their functions. 24 Nov. 10
