Foiled Kumasi jailbreak had support outside prison – Woyongo

The Minister of the Interior Mark Woyongo has accused outsiders of masterminding the foiled jailbreak at the Kumasi Central prisons last week.

The incident, which occurred Wednesday February 4, resulted in the death of an inmate.

The inmates took advantage of a fire outbreak to escape from the prison.

Mr Woyongo, who paid a visit to the Kumasi Central prisons on Monday to ascertain the extent of damage caused by the fire and the riot, warned that officials will not be spared if they are found to be culpable.

He added that preliminary investigations have revealed that the attempted jailbreak was a well-orchestrated one.

“I am going to institute a committee to investigate this because snippets of information we are getting indicate that some people are behind this.

“It was a well-planned jailbreak, fortunately for us it didn’t go through because I am told there were cars standing around to pick some of the prison inmates. That is why they were trying to break the walls,” Woyongo said.

He added that: “We are going to do a very thorough investigation; some of the inmates are already cooperating with the authorities and I am sure we will get to the bottom of the issue”.
