Professor Kwame Osei Kwarteng, Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Mfantsiman Girls Senior High School (SHS), has urged government to put in place pragmatic policies to help find a lasting solution to the erratic power supply problem currently facing the nation.
Prof. Kwarteng, who is also an Associate-Professor at the Department of History of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), said the erratic power supply was seriously affecting the academic work of educational institutions.
He made the call when Mrs Jessica Ama Nkrumah, Business woman and an old student of Mfantsiman Girls, donated a 50-KV-power-plant generator costing 72,000 Ghana Cedis, to the school at Saltpond.
He said the load-shedding problem had brought an additional financial burden to the students, as they have purchased fuel for generators at their schools.
The chairman said with the persistence of the situation, academic calendar of institutions of higher learning could be disturbed, and therefore could make negative impact on the students.
The Chairman thanked Mrs Nkrumah for the donation, and expressed the hope that it would go a long way to solve the power problem facing the school.
Mrs Nkrumah said she was moved to purchase the Plant for the school when she visited her daughter some months ago and detected that there was black-out at the school.
She appealed to old students of the school to come and help their Alma mater, adding that this is the period they must show their love for the school.
Mrs Charlotte A. Addo, Headmistress of the School, said the provision of the Plant would supply power to the Administrative block, Kitchen, classrooms, School chapel and old dining Hall.
She commended Mrs Nkrumah who is a business woman at Mankessim for the donation, adding that the government alone cannot solve problems in schools.
