Five More Pesticides Added To Caution List

Accra,(Greater Accra Region) 24, Sept. Five extremely hazardous pesticides are being added to an existing watch list for their trade to be better monitored and managed in future, the UN Environmental Programme (UNEP) and Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) announced yesterday. The highly concentrated formulations of the five pesticides, known as organophosphates, are methamidophos, methyl parathion, monocrotophos, parathion and phosphamidon. An FAO statement issued in Accra said the five will join 17 harmful pesticides and five industrial chemicals which are already part of the Prior Informed Consent Procedure (PIC). The PIC, according to the statement, is a voluntary system under which these dangerous chemicals are not rpt not to be exported without the agreement of the importing country. It is administered by the FAO and UNEP with 154 participating countries.
