Fisherman convicted for defilement

Takoradi, Feb.11, GNA – A Takoradi Circuit Court “A” on Friday sentenced Kojo Awortwe, a 20-year-old fisherman at Egyambra in the Ahanta West District to 15 years imprisonment in hard labour for defiling a four-year old girl.

The accused pleaded guilty to defilement.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Joe Hedidor, said on January 22 this year, the parents of Christina Yankey, the victim, left for farm leaving her at home at Egyambra.

He said the accused person returned home from a fishing expedition and invited the victim who was playing with her friends into his room Chief Inspector Hedidor said the accused forcibly had sexual intercourse with Yankey who was in pain and was crying. He said after the act, Yankey started bleeding so the accused took her home and left her to her fate.

Chief Inspector Hedidor said the parents detected that the girl was bleeding when they returned from farm and when questioned, she told them the accused person had defiled her.

He said the chief of the village was informed and the accused person was invited for questioning.

Chief Inspector Hedidor said the accused person admitted the offence and was handed over to the police.

He said during interrogation by the Police, the accused said the devil made him to commit the offence. Feb. 11 05
