Fish-farming project for Mafi communities

Mafi-Aformanorkope, Jan. 24, GNA – Eight communities along the bank of River Volta within North-Tongu District would soon benefit from a 1.5 billion-cedi fish-farming project.

The Ministry of Fisheries would initially construct 10 fishing pen along the bank of the river to produce over 25 million fingerlings for distribution to the farmers.

Mr Moses Asem, North-Tongu District Chief Executive announced this at the Fourth Annual joint Nogoryiyiza (Development Festival) of five Mafi communities at Mafi-Aformanorkope at the weekend. The communities are Deveme, Zakofe, Kofedeke, Hayiborkofe and Tsati.

Mr Asem did not mention the beneficiary communities but said the Canadian Government had offered to dredge and clear weeds along the bank of the river for the project. He, therefore, urged the youth in the area to form fish farming groups to benefit from the project. Mr Asem commended the communities for coming together to develop the area.

He announced that rehabilitation of roads in the area had begun and would be extended to other parts of the district including the Kutime-Deveme-Tasti and Aformanokofe roads. Mr Thomas Anomah, Chairman of the Anniversary Planning Committee said the festival provided a platform for the communities to raise funds to undertake development projects.

He said funds raised during a similar festival last year were used to rehabilitate some feeder roads in the area. Mr Anomah said problems affecting the communities were deplorable roads and provision of potable water and complained about contracts for some water projects in the area that had been abandoned.
