First Lady calls for serious attention on girl-child education

Trabuom (Ash), Nov 17, GNA-Mrs Theresa Kufuor, the First Lady, has expressed the need for national efforts to step up the enrolment of the girl-child in school.

This she said would help to empower more women in future to facilitate the progress of society.

Mrs Kufuor was speaking at a fund-raising durbar organised by the Afua Kobi Ampem Girls’ Secondary School at Trabuom in the Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma District in the Ashanti Region. She noted that education was the hub for economic, cultural, social and political development of every nation, hence the need for parents and guardians to complement government efforts to boost teaching and learning in the schools.

Mrs Kufuor advised the students to be disciplined, diligent and study hard to make their teachers and parents proud of them. They should also stay away from pre-marital sex to avoid getting infected with the deadly HIV/AIDS.

Mrs Victoria Annan, the Headmistress, said although the school was been supported by the Otumfuo Education Fund and the District Assembly, there was the need for other stakeholders to help in the provision of an administration block, a library, Assembly Hall, additional classrooms and accommodation for teachers.

She appealed for urgent rehabilitation works on some of the staff bungalows, which was in a deplorable state. An amount of 900 million cedis was raised at the ceremony with The Trust Bank Limited contributing 50 million cedis.
