Fire outbreaks in the country are abnormal – NFS

The National Fire Service (NFS) says the incidences of fire outbreaks in the first quarter of this year are above a normal level.

The recent fires across the country have so far claimed eight lives.

Since 2009 the Kumasi market has suffered five major fire outbreaks leading to extensive loss of property.

In an interview with Citi News the Public Relations Officer of Ghana NFS, Ellis Robinsin, indicated that when you compare previous level of firebreaks, you realise that this year’s own may not necessarily be higher.

“But I will say that it is not normal. Fire is not a good thing when it causes damage to properties and items that people have acquired over the years,” he said.

In Accra, Agbobloshie and Tema stations have had their share of fires this year, with the recent one in Kantamanto market.

Meanwhile the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) says it has restored power to some parts of the capital that were left in darkness after fire gutted the Achimota Sub Station over the weekend.

According to the Director of Operations, Tetteh Okine, ECG has indicated that it is yet to ascertain the cause of the fire but is working around the clock to get the plant back on stream.
