Fire guts La Police station

Accra, May 2 GNA – Fire gutted the first floor of La District Police Station on Friday destroying documents and items at the various offices. The cause of the fire was not immediately known, however the District Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mr. Richard Gyebi, Commander in-Charge of the station told reporters that he had left the office few minutes earlier around 15 00 hours to have his meal when he had a call from one of his men that his office was on fire. He said he rushed back to the Police station but by the time he got there personnel from the La Trade Fair Fire station had arrived and were putting off the fire.

DSP Gyebi who was visibly shaken said the fire burnt everything in his office including GH¢ 520 and GH¢ 950 being kept as exhibits in his drawers and cabinet. He said eleven remand prisoners who were being kept at the Police station had been transferred to Nungua and other nearby Police stations. He commended the people in the area for assisting the Police and the Fire Service personnel to put off the fire. Mr Emmanuel Adjei, Commander of the Trade Fair Fire Station said they also had a call around 15.05 hours that the La Police station was on fire. He said he rushed to the place with his men and managed to put off the fire in about forty-fives minutes and he could not tell the cause of the fire and the extent of damage until investigations were completed.
