Gomoa Potsin (C/R), Nov 29, GNA – The Director General (DG) of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mr Michael Nsowah, has warned that final year Senior Secondary School students who had registered for their examinations could be dismissed for flouting rules and regulations. He noted that especially that the behaviour of some students after registration bordered on “insanity”.
Mr Nsowah stated at the eight Speech and Prize-giving Day of the T. I. Ahmadiyya Secondary School at Gomoa Potsin in the Central region. He said, “Unfortunately, it is the belief of final year students that once they have registered for their examination they have become untouchable or have immunity against dismissal”.
Registered students can be barred from sitting their examination once his or her school dismisses him or her. All we need to do is to inform West Africa Examination Council to delete the name of such student from the list of the candidates, the DG stated. He cautioned that this would be done without any refund of the examination fees paid by the affected students.
The DG expressed concern about the recent upsurge of indiscipline and students unrest in the second cycle institutions, adding that, “Cases of indiscipline have gradually progressed from bulling to drug abuse”.
He urged parents to be responsible for the discipline students to enhance effective teaching and learning, and noted that some parents even do not find out about the where about of their children especially the females where they had been the previous night. He pointed out that about 50 percent of basic school children were attending schools established by missionaries and other religious organisations.
Ms Joyce Aidoo, Gomoa District Chief Executive, announced that the District Assembly would construct teachers’ bungalows for the school under its 2006 budget.
She said since the government alone could not shoulder the development of education other stakeholders should give the needed support.
Mr Mohammed Ackonu, Headmaster said the school had embarked on an extension of the old dinner hall to accommodate more students. Maulvi Wahab Adam, Ameer and Missionary in-charge of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission, called on old students to help in the development of their Alma Matter to ensue quality education.
