Farmer fined for stealing tubers of yam

Mankranso (Ash), Jan 29, GNA – The Mankranso magistrate’s court has fined a 19-year-old farmer of Asuogya, near Wioso in the Ahafo-Ano South district 500,000 cedis for stealing 15 tubers of yam valued at 300,000 cedis.

Kwame Collins pleaded guilty and will serve six months in jail in default of paying the fine.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector George Nyansu told the court, presided over by Mr Frank Owusu-Afriyie, that on November 12, last year, at about 1500 hours, Collins was spotted carrying yams to his house. He said neighbours became suspicious and confronted him but he could not give any tangible reason.

A report was made to the police and during interrogation Collins admitted stealing the yam from a farm belonging to Seidu Amin, the complainant.
