Ahomahomasu (E/R), April 29, GNA – Parents in the Fanteakwa District of the Eastern Region have been told that even though the government had announced a policy on fee-free education at the basic level, it had not yet issued any white paper on its implementation. He District Director of Education, Mr Stephen Peter-Andoh, who stated this, urged parents to continue to pay their wards school fees until the government comes out with the implementation of the policy. Mr Peter-Andoh made the call when he distributed incentive packages to 100 needy pupils at separate functions at Ahomahomasu and Feyiase in the Fanteakwa District on Wednesday.
The package, provided by the Ghana Education Service (GES) annually included school bags, exercise books and writing materials worth over 3 million cedis.
Mr Peter-Andoh regretted that most parents in the area paid lip service to their occupation, but attached prominence to the purchase of expensive funeral cloths, spending heavily on alcohol and on annual festival celebration at the expense of their wards education. He asked parents to impress upon their children to stay home in the evenings and study rather than patronizing video centres. An Assistant Director of Education, Mr K. N. Adjabeng asked parents to feed their children before they go to school to enable them concentrate on their studies.
