Evaluate impact of award schemes- Educationist

Hohoe, June 22, GNA- Mr Albert Agra, a retired educationist on Thursday called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to institute a research to evaluate the impact of the Best Teacher award schemes. He said in spite of these schemes to reward professionalism, hard work and motivate teachers and auxiliary workers, the collective standards continue to dip abysmally.

Mr Agra was speaking at the 2006 Hohoe District Best Teacher/Non-Teaching Staff Award celebration, where 22 beneficiaries received bundles of roofing sheets for distinguishing themselves. He said such a research should test for variables of its impact, whether to increase the quantum of awardees, reorganize the whole scheme or scrap it off entirely.

Mr Agra said the utility of the awards should be investigated to ascertain if that’s what the teachers actually wanted. He said otherwise stakeholders might be working without the desired impacts and effects being felt. Mr Agra said a system should be designed to motivate all teachers irrespective of the award schemes, now that enrolment figures have soared resulting from the capitation grant.
