EU welcomes Ghana’s elections

Accra, Dec. 14, GNA- The European Union (EU) on Tuesday said it welcomed the democratic and transparent manner in which the Presidential and Parliamentary elections were held last Tuesday and extended its congratulations to President John Agyekum Kufuor on the occasion of his re-election for a second term.

“The Ghanaian people have given a clear sign of their commitment to the further consolidation of democracy in their country,” the EU said in a statement issued by the Dutch Presidency.

“The high turnout and the orderly and peaceful conduct of the elections demonstrate the maturity of the democratic process in Ghana,” it said.

The EU also congratulated all political parties and civil society representatives for their contribution to the smooth conduct of the polling.

“The European Union would like in particular to commend the Electoral Commission (EC) for the manner in which it has carried out its constitutional duties.”

The EU said it looked forward to continuing its partnership with Ghana and expressed its willingness to contribute to the political, economic and social development of the country.
