Embrace family planning – GHS

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has advised women to stick to reliable methods of contraception to avoid increasing unwanted pregnancies and maternal deaths.

According to the Deputy Director of the Family Planning Division at the Service, Dr Isabella Sagoe-Moses, about 30 per cent of maternal deaths stem from unsafe abortions.

Dr Sagoe-Moses, in an interview with Class News, said significant investment in family planning was urgent for Ghana’s shared growth and developmental agenda.

“Most of the unsafe abortions are as a result of unwanted pregnancies. People have not planned to get pregnant and then they find themselves in those situations and so one of the surest ways is to make family planning accessible to all,” she stated adding:

“Unfortunately, a lot of our women have some misconceptions about family planning so we are also trying to [educate them] so that they will accept and embrace family planning and be able to plan their pregnancies and reduce unwanted pregnancies.”
