Electricity is expensive – VRA

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has called on Ghanaians to brace up to pay “cost-reflective” tariffs for utilities especially electricity.

According to the Authority, the recent electricity tariff adjustment announced by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) though welcoming is not realistic.

Speaking to TV3’s Sandra Amarquaye on Wednesday, Samuel Flether, the Director of Public Affairs of the Authority, insisted that Ghanaians should be made to understand that for an improved service from the energy-distribution companies, the right tariffs must be paid.

“Neighbouring countries pay more for electricity than we do,” he stated, “meanwhile, we have the highest access to electricity in the sub-region.”

PURC on Tuesday announced a 6.54 per cent increase in electricity tariffs for the last quarter of the year.

“We need to understand that electricity is expensive. If we want it, we have to pay for it.”
