Electricity Booster Project to ease load shedding in Southern Volta

Aflao, March 1, GNA – The problem of load-shedding in electricity supply in the southern part of the Volta Region and the Dangbe East District in Greater Accra Region will end in May this year when the VRA would have completed an Electricity Booster Project (BSP) at Denu in the Volta Region. The two point five billion cedi (2.5 billion cedis) project will provide Denu and Aflao with a separate and upgraded Bulk Supply Point (BSP) thus relieving the overstressed Sogakope BSP, which now serves the entire southern sector of the Volta Region and the Dangbe East District.

Mr Yao Kumah, Ketu District Manager of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), made this known in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Denu on Monday. He said the Sogakope supply station, which feeds Ketu, Keta, Akatsi, South and North Tongu and Dangbe East districts was at a breaking point hence the need to shed the load to save the equipment. “We understand the concerns of the affected communities and we hope by May this year everything will be over”, he said.

Mr Kumah said the 5 Megawatts (MVA) transformer at Denu sub-station would be upgraded to 10 MVA, the control room and the entire station area expanded to receive the extra set of control equipment whose platforms have already been erected. He said when completed, both the Denu and Sogakope BSPs would become reliable alternate power supply points capable of shoring up each other in case of any problem at one end. Residents, small scale business operators and health institutions in the area, which lack alternative sources of power supply have borne the brunt of the load shedding exercise and drops in power supply since November last year.
