Kwabeng (E/R), Aug 31, GNA – Residents of Atiwa constituency have expressed worry at media hype to create the impression that there is tension in the constituency as the result of the by-election and this could threaten the security of the area.
People who spoke to the Ghana News Agency said there was peace in the constituency and people were going about their normal duties.
Kwaku Owusu, an 18-year-old student of Anyinam Senior High School who spoke to GNA after casting his vote at Presbyterian Primary School at Anyinam, said apart from the election, nothing more was happening in the town and people were going about their daily businesses without hindrance.
He said he had not seen any armed men or women or strangers apart from the police at the polling stations.
Mr Augustine Twumasi, a 25-year-old businessman and Mr Mohamed Abubakar a 20-year-old taxi driver, said they had not seen any “macho men” as being alleged on air by representatives of some of the political parties who are contesting the by-election.
Opanin Yaw Adu-Kumi, an opinion leader at Kwabeng, commended political parties contesting the by-election for conducting the activities peacefully in the constituency.
He appealed to all parties in the election to ensure that the prevailing peace continued till the declaration of the result.
Opanin Adu-Kumi appealed to media personnel covering the election to be circumspect in their reportage in order not to create unnecessary fear and panic among the people.
“Atiwa has remained one of the most peaceful areas in Ghana and we want it to remain as such,” he said.
