Elect candidate who can beat Mills – Ken Agyepong

As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) prepares for its crucial national delegates congress in December to elect its flag-bearer to lead the party in the 2008 general elections, Kennedy Agyepong, a well-known critic of his government has sounded a note of caution not to make the mistake of electing someone who cannot win the 2008 election for the party.

According to him, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flag-bearer for next year’s election, Prof. Atta Mills is already popular having served as the Vice President of this country and also contested the same position on two occasions with President Kufour and therefore, commands the respect of over 40% of the electorate.

Mr. Agyepong said this yesterday at a mammoth rally organised by the party to run-off one-week celebration of the formation of the party, here in Tema.

He explained that, the party should elect someone who will not only contest the NDC flagbearer but someone who can beat the NDC flagbearer.

He cautioned the people not to be swollen headed by the good work of President Kufuor, which according to him might be an advantage to the party but working extra hard is the best.

To this end, the Assin North Member of Parliament (MP) has thrown a note of caution to the would-be delegates who in an attempt to enrich themselves collect money from aspirants with the promise of giving them their votes.

“You should therefore bear in mind that you are not doing the party any good if you do so. I am therefore sounding a note of advice to all of you not to disappoint Ghanaians,” he stressed.

He called on party followers to be proud of achievements of the NPP government and urged them to continue to work hard for victory in 2008, adding that they should not make the mistake of allowing the NDC to come back after President Kufuor’s tenure.
