Educate children on hygiene – NGO official

Ho, April. 16, GNA-Mr Kwami Adanu, President of Friends of the Disadvantaged Elderly and Children (FRIDEC), a Non-Governmental Organisation on Friday called on parents to sensitise their children on personal and community hygiene.

He said knowledge of children about good sanitation practices could guarantee the good health of their families and communities. Mr Adanu said this at a day’s seminar on sanitation for pupils of Ho SSNIT Flat Presbyterian School Complex in Ho.

He said children needed education on sanitation more than anyone else in the family because they were more exposed to poor sanitation related diseases.

The seminar was organised by FRIDEC with sponsorship from Action Medeor, a Pharmaceutical company in Germany.

Mr Adanu said providing children with the basic information about refuse disposal was strategic to the battle of poor sanitation practices, which was a major cause of child related diseases. He said it was, therefore, the responsibility of parents to mould their children to develop good habits since their health was vital to the development of the nation.

Mr. Adanu noted, ” it is when they are healthy that they can enhance productivity and create wealth which will raise the community’s standard of living”.

After a short talk on poor sanitation and its related diseases by Mrs Pamela Ayime, Senior Nursing Officer of Ho Municipal Hospital, the pupils were mobilised and provided with tools to clean the school compound.

They also cleaned the compound of the SSNIT Flats and collected and properly disposed of garbage scattered around the rubbish containers that serve the Flats.
