Edikanfo computer centre inaugurated

Akokobediaburo(WR), June 04, GNA – A 35 million cedis Edikanfo Computer Centre for Golden Star Preparatory and Junior Secondary School (JSS) has been inaugurated at Akokobediaburo near Bogoso in the Wassa West District of Western Region.

Expatriate wives of the management of Golden Star Resources, Bogoso/Prestea Limited (GSRBPL) provided 20 million cedis while the Parent-Teacher-Association of the school contributed 15 million cedis. Inaugurating the centre, Mrs Sophia Quansah, a retired educationist said the world was witnessing scientific and technological advancement in all spheres of life with the computer playing a vital role. She said when the computer was properly managed, it could reduce the rate of moral decadence among the youth, adding “When their youthful exuberance was channelled into learning computer skills, it would keep them from indulging in social vices that would affect their well-being.” Mrs Quansah noted that the youth had more affection for pleasure than learning and the computer provided the alternative means of entertainment that kept children at home instead of roaming about in the street.

She advised the students to make good use of the centre. Mrs Louise McLennan, Chairperson of Edikanfo Residents Association made up of expatriates’ wives of GSRBPL staying at Edikanfo, said they were concerned about the future of the children and felt that the centre would provide a better place for learning. She said with the computer learning would be made easier because information on the computer was the same worldwide. Mr Thomas Anyimah, Headmaster of the school said the children had been working on computers and had acquired skills to make them computer literate. He appealed to organizations, parents and guardians for assistance to expand the centre. 04 June 07
