Accra Nov. 23, GNA – Chief Justices of the Economic West African States (ECOWAS) would meet in Accra on Thursday November 24, to discuss matters confronting the Sub-Region.
The two-day conference is under the theme: “The Judiciary as a Partner in the Regional Integration Process.”
Chief Justice George Kingsley Acquah, who conceived the idea, recalled the spate of war, crime and injustices in the Sub-Region saying: “We need to come together and find solutions to these problems.” Professor Tawiah Modibo Ocran, a Supreme Court Judge and a Chairman of the Planning Committee, said the conference would explore ways of strengthening national judiciaries and establishing a forum to discuss regional judicial matters in relation to the ECOWAS Court of Justice. He mentioned Mali, Togo, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea, Burkina Faso and Benin as some of the countries that had indicated that they would participate.
In addition, Prof. Ocran said the conference would attract observers from Zimbabwe.
Topics to be discussed include: “The Role of the Judiciary in Nation Building”; “The ECOWAS Court of Justice: Its Jurisdiction and Enforcement of it Decisions” and “Mechanization of Courts,” among other issues.
