The Landlords Association of Nungua in the Ledzokuku-Krowor Municipality of the Greater Accra Region has sued the Electricity Company of Ghana for placing power meters outside their homes.
The agitated residents are asking the court to set aside or quash the company’s policy to re-locate prepaid metres from homes onto street side poles.
A writ filed at the High Court is seeking a perpetual injunction restraining the board of directors, managing director, regional directors, and officials of the ECG from implementing the policy of re-locating prepaid metres within the Nungua township.
In the writ, Lawyer for the landlords, Ayikoi Otoo, argued the danger associated with coming out late or at mid-night to reload credits exposes consumers to criminals who can easily attack them in the dark.
He also cited ladies and teenage girls as some of the groups of people who stand the risk of being raped and even murdered.
Lawyer Ayikoi Otoo also posited criminals can disconnect electricity from outside the home and compel inmates to come out thinking their credits are exhausted only for them to be attacked.
Residents of Nungua and its environs have embarked on several protests and sometimes clashed with ECG officials in a bid to relay their concerns but to no avail, hence their decision to use the court.
