Executive Director of a Kumasi based policy think tank, Center for Economic and Business Research (CEBAR) Newlove Asamoah has suggested that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) cannot be effective under state control.
Government is considering a private takeover of the management of the electricity company.
The move has been opposed by workers of the ECG and some Civil Society Organisations (CSOs).
But Mr. Asamoah contends allowing the ECG to operate under competent private leadership will save the company from its insolvency.
Speaking on Ultimate breakfast show hosted by Lantam Papanko, he believes officials of ECG will inculcate good practices used by private entities in the country if its privatised.
‘Government has a hand in appointing the management especially the board, how efficient are the board members, how efficient are the people at the helm of ECG, were they appointed based on their, competences, experiences or because of their political affiliations, when I owe ECG, they come and discount me, why will they allow government to owe you over five hundred million dollars without discounting the government.
Moving forward for a solution, we need to get government out of ECG’s management. If they work as private entity, they will inculcate all the good practices that private organisations use to run their organisations,’ he asserted.
