EC: Prisoners to begin biometric registration soon

The Electoral Commission has told XYZ News that, they are yet to begin the registration exercise for Prisoners ahead of the December General Elections.

The registration follows a decision by the Commission to allow prisoners to vote in the upcoming elections.

Though the EC’s decision received mixed reactions from the two leading political parties, the Commission says it will soon set a date for the exercise to begin.

Speaking to XYZ News, Courage Atsem spokesperson for the Ghana Prisons Service said, they are ready for the commencement of the exercise.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission says despite a few challenges that has characterized the ongoing biometric voter registration exercise, much success has been chalked.

The Biometric Voter’s registration, has been rocked by issues of inadequate security in some parts of the country forcing registration in those areas to be suspended.

As the exercise enters week two, officials of electoral commission say they are hopeful the challenges will be addressed.

Chairman of the Electoral Commission for the Greater Accra Region, Alex Poku Akordia in an interview with XYZ News said he is hopeful that the remaining days left for the registration will be very peaceful.**
