Eastern Region to meet street naming deadline

The 26 municipal and district assemblies in the Eastern Region were close to meeting the President’s 31st September deadline for the naming of all streets in the country.

This came to light when Mr Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, the Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development and Ms Mavis Ama Frimpong, Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, visited some assemblies to inspect the ongoing exercise.

Talking to the press after the visits, Ms Frimpong said, about 88 percent of the 26 assemblies in the Region have completed their street naming by mid- September and assured that, the remaining assemblies would complete before the deadline.

She however expressed reservations about some five assemblies but did not mention them.

She explained that, in those assemblies, there were either differences of opinion between the Assembly and opinion leaders over the selection of names for some streets or the districts did not have Chief Executives and others where the pilot areas had to be changed.

Mr Vanderpuye said he was impressed with the general outcome, judging from the mist of constraints, difficulties and challenges that the assemblies had to go through and commends the assemblies and their Chief Executives.

He said he was positive that the Eastern Region could achieve the 80 percent target expected.

Mr Vanderpuye indicated that, this phase of the exercise was to deal with the erection of the sign post, signage and the naming of the streets, adding that, the next phase would look at the naming of the properties.

The visit took the team to three districts in the Region. The Upper Manya Krobo District where Asesewa township was use for the pilot exercise, in the Asuogyaman District, New Akrade was use for the pilot scheme, while Somanya was use for the pilot exercise in the Yilo Krobo District.
