Eastern Region recorded 27 per cent in mopping-up exercise

Koforidua, Sept 30, GNA – The Eastern Regional Electoral Commission (EC) recorded 27.7 per cent in the photo-taking mopping-up exercise that ended on Thursday.

A statement issued at Koforidua by the Regional Director of the EC, Mr Samuel Ntow, said only 16,613 out of the expected 73,301 registered voters took advantage of the special mopping-up photo taking. It said out of the region’s 1,146,064 registered voters there are now 56,688 of them who have no photo-identity cards that would make them eligible to exercise their franchise in the December elections.

The Deputy Regional Electoral Officer, Mr Eric Mensah-Bonsu, said there are about 200 voter challenge cases still pending on appeal at a Koforidua High Court from the West Akim District.

He attributed the delay to the absence of either the challenger or the challenged at the Court hearings.

Te EC has announced that the Provisional Voter’s Register would be displayed at all polling stations throughout the country from October 12 to 17.
