Accra, Feb. 18, GNA – The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has warned that driving schools that are not licensed by the authority will be closed down.
The DVLA said it has introduced written test and set up a minimum pass mark of 78 per cent for the acquisition of driving licence, adding that, the practical driving test has been restructured with standard requirement and a minimum score of 70 per cent.
These were contained in a statement issued by DVLA in Accra in reaction to concerns raised by the Maritime and Dockworkers Union (MDWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) about the increase in road accidents. The MDWU requested that professionalism should be introduced in driving as a national priority.
The statement said “We have set standards to license all driving schools and all prospective drivers shall be trained according to syllabus provided by DVLA to all licensed schools”.
The DVLA said it was also training driving instructors in conjunction with National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI) and all licensed driving schools were required “by our standard to recruit minimum of two DVLA licensed instructors.”
The DVLA said it would replace all old driving licences, which could easily be faked with computer readable ones. The statement said drivers would therefore, be required to take eye test during acquisition and renewal of licences.
“This is to ensure that our drivers have good eye sight and that those who require glasses to drive do so”, it added.
However, DVLA said, its efforts would come to nought if the police, did not check reckless driving and ensure that drivers used genuine licenses.
