Drivers unhappy with state of Sunyani roads

Duayaw-Nkwanta (B/A), Nov. 26, GNA – The executives of Sunyani Zone One branch of Ghana Private Roads Transport Union (GPRTU) of Trades Union Congress (TUC) have expressed dissatisfaction with the rehabilitation works on some roads in the municipality.

The union executives said the exercise involving the spread of black gravels on the roads was rather wiping off road markings designed to guide drivers and pedestrians.

They appealed to Sunyani Municipal Assembly to help restore the markings and other essentials on the roads.

Drivers under the umbrella of the GPRTU in the region have been divided into four zones namely, Ahafo, Techiman, Berekum and Sunyani to facilitate smooth administration.

The Sunyani zonal branch union includes drivers from Odomase, Yamfo, Sunyani, Bomaa, Bechem, Duayaw-Nkwanta, Techimantia and Nsoatre.

The union executives said the Sunyani-Chiraa-Techiman lorry park, as well as the main lorry park at Nana Bosoma Market were in deplorable conditions and appealed to the Municipal Assembly to extend the rehabilitation works to those two parks.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Anthony Appiah, Duayaw-Nkwanta District Police Commander, who represented the Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Union (MTTU) Mr Wesley Baah, advised drivers in the region not to be carried away by the approaching Christmas season, but to drive cautiously and help reduce accidents.

DSP Appiah appealed to drivers to ensure that their vehicles had good tyres, effective brake systems, valid driving license and proper reflective stickers.

He advised drivers to check any defective eye-sight, avoid unnecessary over-speeding and cautioned them against using a mobile phone whilst driving.

DSP Appiah urged the union executives to meet periodically with member-drivers to share their experiences and ethics of the profession.

Union executives suggested the need for the police to conduct periodic exercises to check fake licenses and arrested and prosecuted any driver who possessed one.
