Drivers arbitrary increased transportation fares

Drivers in the Kwahu South District have arbitrary increased transport fares between 80 and 100 percent following the government’s announcement of over 90 percent increase in petroleum products.

Some drivers charge from Nkawkaw to Donkorkrom, 18,000 cedis instead of 11,000 cedis, Nkawkaw-Accra, 15,000 cedis instead of 7,500 cedis, Nkawkaw-Koforidua, 10,000 cedis instead of 5,500 cedis, Nkawkaw-Obo 5,000 cedis instead of 3,000 cedis, Nkawkaw-Anyinam, 6,000 cedis instead of 3,000 cedis, Nkawkaw – Abetifi, 5,000 cedis instead of 2,500 cedis and Nkawkaw-Mpraeso, 4,000 cedis instead of 2,000 cedis.

Most of the drivers Ghana News Agency (GNA) interviewed said they would run at a loss if they accept the government’s increase of 30 percent on the old fares due to the high cost of insurance premiums, spare parts, lorry tyres, lubricants and the over 90 percent fuel increase.

They, therefore, urged the Ghana Road Transport Co-ordinating Council (GRTCC) to sit down with the government to come out with reasonable fares in the transport sector.
