Driver remanded for killing pedestrian

A tipper truck driver, who allegedly knocked down a 31-year-old woman at Awoshie Last Stop in Accra killing her instantly, has appeared before an Accra circuit court.

Iddi Abdul Rahman, charged with dangerous and inconsiderate driving, has pleaded guilty. Rahman’s appearance in court came after the police had received an advice from the Attorney General’s office.

The court, presided over by Ms Ellen Vivian Amoah, ordered the police to furnish it with a police sketch, a vehicle examiner’s report and the expenses incurred during the burial of the deceased, Naomi Amegatcher.

Rahman’s counsel had prayed the court to take into consideration the fact that his client’s employers had given the family of the deceased GH¢15,000 for burial and the fact that the incident was an accident.

The police are expected to furnish the court with the above documents on July 9. Meanwhile, the court has fixed July 14 for Rahman’s sentencing as the court remands him into custody.

Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Agnes Boafo, told the court that on September, last year, at about 1:30 pm, Rahman was driving a Howo Sinotrack with registration number GR 2572-12 from Anyaa towards Awoshie.

Prosecution said on reaching a section of the road at Anyaa Last Stop, the accused person decided to reverse on the service lane and in the process knocked down the deceased who was walking on the shoulders of the road heading towards Anyaa.

ASP Boafo said the rear tyres of the vehicle ran over Madam Amegatcher killing her instantly. A report was made to the police and Rahman was arrested and put before court while a duplicate docket was forwarded to the Attorney General’s office for advice.
