Driver jailed for stealing 500,000 cedis

Sekondi Feb. 6, GNA – A magistrate’s court at Sekondi on Tuesday sentenced John Cobbinah, driver, to nine months imprisonment in hard labour for stealing 500,000 cedis. He pleaded guilty.

Prosecuting, Police Sergeant Adu Kyeremeh, said the accused used to buy cooked rice from Winfred Mensah, the complainant at Egyam near Takoradi where they both lived.

He said the accused used to go into the kitchen of the complainant to drink water and at about 10.00 hours on January 28 this year, the accused took advantage of the absence of the complainant and went into the kitchen.

Sergeant Kyeremeh said the accused stole 500,000 cedis from the complainant’s bag and bolted.

He said after the theft, the complainant arrested the accused person and handed him over to the Police. Sergeant Kyeremeh said during interrogation, the accused admitted the offence.

In his plea for mitigation, the accused said he used the stolen money to pay for a pair of jeans. 06 Feb. 07
