Driver, 29, remanded for stealing cell phone

Winneba, June 10, GNA – Kobina Nyame, taxi driver, 29, from Sankor near Winneba has been remanded by a Magistrate’s Court at Winneba for stealing a NOKIA 1100 cell phone valued at 2 million cedis. Nyame, who pleaded not guilty, would reappear before the Court presided over by Mr Fatau Yakubu on June 21.

Prosecuting Police Chief Inspector William Kwame Akannah told the Court that on June 3, this year Executive Members of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) joined Nyame’s taxi from the University College, South Campus to the North for a meeting. He said the Complainant received a call while on the way and later alighted at their destination.

After the meeting, the Complainant, who could not find his cell phone, confronted the driver but Nyame denied ever seeing the phone in his car. A report was made to the Police who arrested Nyame but he again denied seeing it.

The Prosecution said Nyame was re-arrested upon information that he had the phone in his possession. Nyame then admitted that he had taken the phone and produced it. Mr Yakubu in his remarks expressed dismay about the rate at which people in the area had resorted to cell phone stealing, adding that about 10 cell phone stealing cases were currently pending before the Court.

In another development, Gyameshie Kwaku, a Mason, who allegedly stole a cell phone from a chop barkeeper at Winneba Junction on September 3, last year has been granted a self-recognisance bail to re-appear on June 14.
