Downing Old Parliament House naive – Nduom

Dr Papa Kwasi Nduom, Founder of the Progressive Peoples Party (PPP), has said the decision to pull down the Old Parliament House in Accra was bad.

The Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) over the weekend contracted Cymain Ghana Limited to pull down the building.

The structure, which housed the Citizens Vetting Committee (CVC), the Judgment Debt Commission, CHRAJ and the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO), was abandoned after it was razed by fire in 2013.

Commenting on the flattening of the edifice on his Facebook page, Dr Nduom said: “I can’t even begin to try to understand how anyone would be so, so clueless as to consider the Old Parliament House just any old building that can be pulled down to make way for some modern office building. Amazing!

“We must not allow this to end like this. We must find out who gave approval to whom, when and where to do this? And deal with everyone involved well, well. And where has the Museums and Monuments Board been? Shouldn’t they have designated this a historical site and marked it for preservation in honor of our democracy? Sankofa applies very well to this situation.

“CHRAJ should go somewhere else. Ghanaian architects should reconstruct what has been pulled down and preserve the building as a historical site dedicated to democratic Ghana where government and political party memorabilia can be put on display. I will be happy to help raise funds for this cause. And so should every citizen.”
