Don’t think you can make senseless speech on social media and go free, we’ll track you”- President warns

President John Dramani Mahama has warned against hate speeches especially those which are being used by social media users to incite violence and denigrate people without any due cause. He has also vowed a track down on these online trouble-makers with the measures put in place by the NSB.

During an engagement with the media, President John Dramani Mahama issued a stern warning to individuals using new media platforms to spread hate speech, misinformation, and incite violence. He stated that the government will not tolerate baseless and inflammatory comments aimed at attacking leaders and causing unrest.

“I’m sending a signal to Ghanaians: those engaging in hate speech, we will use your IP numbers and find you,” the President declared. He emphasized that those found to be inciting violence or disturbing the peace through their online activities will face legal consequences under the criminal code.

President Mahama further highlighted the urgent need for regulations to govern the new media landscape, which currently lacks adequate oversight. He referenced examples of inappropriate and insensitive content being shared online.

“We need regulations for this new emerging media,” he affirmed, citing instances of individuals posting offensive and harmful content.

The President revealed that the National Signals Bureau has been granted the authority and technological capabilities to track down individuals responsible for such actions.
